Refilling your empty tank instead of exchanging it for a full tank

Although it is very convenient to exchange your empty propane tank for a full one at a local retail store – it actually is more expensive to exchange tanks.  Not only does it cost more to exchange a tank than to have it refilled – but it seems like sometimes you don’t actually get a full tank.  If you get it refilled, you can actually see on the meter how much propane is being put into your empty tank.

Save Money by Visiting one of these refill stations

You can refill you empty tank at UHaul, BJ’s Wholesale Club and propane distribution sites.  It is very much like getting your gas tank refilled and a technician will do it for you.  In reality it doesn’t take that much longer than trading in for an exchange tank.  We recently save $6.00 on the tank refill – plus we got 3-4 more pounds of propane.

Exchange Tanks contain less propane now

Exchange tanks used to be around 18 pounds but now they have relabeled their products and are only selling 15 pound tanks – but the price remains the same.  It’s kind of like inflation and that shrinking candy bar size.

How to save on propane when camping

If you are camping, those one pound propane bottles are so convenient – but again you pay for that convenience.  Did you know that instead of spending money on the small bottles, that you can use your regular bbq size tank and save money with a few adapters.

Invest in a 3 outlet propane distribution post and SAVE

The 3 outlet propane distribution post is a long pole that attached to your regular bbq propane tank.  At the top of the tank you can screw on a lantern.  The post has 2 additional ports (some even have a total of 5 ports).  So you can take one tank and use a lantern, cook with your propane stove and hook up a buddy heater.

The 3 outlet adapter post and additional hose connectors can be found on Amazon and they are not that expensive. Here is a link to these products.  Note that we are an affiliate and will receive a small percentage if you make a purchase.3t5AZpr

Save money by refilling your one pound propane bottles with this adapter

The other way to save money on propane is by refilling your small bottles by buying this adapter.  Again it is available on Amazon and the affiliate link is below.  Refilling the small tanks can be a little tricky because you need to bleed the tank so you can actually have room for the propane.  But once you get the hang of it, you will see how easy it is to save money with this adapter.

Summary – 3 ways to save on propane

So to recap – save money on propane by refilling your tank rather then exchanging it.  If you go camping, invest in an adapter so you can refill your one pound bottles and consider purchasing a 3 outlet propane distribution post which allows you to connect 3 things,  (like a lantern, stove and heater) on your regular bbq size propane tank.
